The show began today at 6 pm in the space we had been developing the projects. We received updates of the code from jake + tamas + alex from Chicago, but we couldn’t at first get it running. With about three hours left we were quite understandably getting worried. But with about two hours left we finally got it working, and pieced everything together just in time for the opening, gluing the final side together about fifteen minutes before. The opening went well, their was a large attendance and their was also a lot of interest in our project.

Today we were scrambling to get everything together with one day left to the project exhibition. Some of the trouble we were having was getting the Mac OS X installed so that we could set up the blue tooth communication with the Arduino board and the Wii remote. We finished up the cube construction with the LEDs and began programing the triggers for the still and active variables sent from max/msp when motion was sensed. We wrote a code that was uploaded on the board looking for the two triggers and activated a sequence. When movement was sensed it changed quicker, when no movement it changed slower.

max/msp: 06.07.07.

/// this is the gorgeous magical cmd line app by jake+tamas [ early build ] \\\

Today we’ve been troubleshooting various problems that have come up with the setup/hardware. A certain element of the software that we are using to control the wii remote turns out the be mac-compliant only. So their has been a bit of a scramble to settle the issue of which option is best. Macintosh’s BlueTooth stack seems to be best between win/mac, so we have chosen to still use Max+mac, but now we are scrambling to assemble the hardware.

We’ve also had some setbacks (again) to the LED+CUBE setup. Were working through it and managing, altering slightly the outcome but still maintaining some interactivity. Fernando wired a ShiftOut setup and were also working on controlling it with Arduino+bluetooth via variables from max. So when it is picked up it will pass an active boolean, and when at rest it will send resting command via ascii2max.

Jake+Tamas sent us some demo versions of their terminal app and it is gorgeous.

Also, some of us who worked later into the night on a special agreement with the festival managed to purportedly [ according to the security guard ] knock out a substantial amount of Madrid’s power grid [ half, according to the guard ]. My favorite theory is that a fellow attendee shorted his USB powered Arduino board, which caused his laptop to crash/short and then it went dark…

Today Jon + Nina were able to join us, which was great to have a couple more hands+ideas to be about. Nina’s been diligently assembling the materials to setup the IX in the exhibition space and Jon has been working on setting up the show computers. We’ve had to simplify slightly our LED setup to accommodate for the remaining time + and save ourselves from foreseeable problems with the RGB LED setup. The new setup is going to be a shade of #EE3A8C magenta. It will be a red / blue combo and wired to glow brighter when interacted with.

Today we worked on soldering/wiring of the I.R. LEDs to help align the Wii Remote.
The remote is going to look to these two boxes emitting I.R. to triangulate its position
in relation to the computer screens. It needs to do this because the program interpreting
its signal [ max/msp ] is checking to see which computer the user is pointing the cube at so that
it can send the activation signal to the corresponding computer.

purple glow

June 5, 2007

Mark, Fernando, Nina + i (jonCates) have decided to reduce the colors of the cube in this instance of the project to 1 color. we will create a purple glow w/18 red + blue LEDs.

June 2, 2007

Detailed Description::

Hackcube is glowing automagical amulet that casts 9 randomly selected
spells on unsuspecting computers while softly singing generative
celestial songs in it’s own magical languages. As powerful digital
talisman containing 9 magic spells, Hackcube is a self contained device
that interacts wirelessly with computers in it’s direct proximity.

The user of this automagical amulet must hold and shake Hackcube in front
of the computer that they wish to bewitch. Hackcube ‘s inner glow increases
and it emits a soft pulsing light while it’s singing voice raises to
an audible level. Hackcube then chooses from 1 of 9 spells to cast on the
system. As the Hackcube amulet chooses a spell it begins to glow more
brightly with the spell’s specific color.

When the spells are castson the nearby computer, Hackcube invokes a magic
command line applicationwindow that automagically opens on the computer screen,
running andexecuting 1 of the 9 spells. The magic command line application
window invokes spells of specific significance to our contemporary
computer cultures.

The spells that Hackcube chooses are beyond the control
of the computer user or those that hold Hackcube . As an autonomous system
Hackcube selects from the 9 spells inscribed inside Hackcube to: turn computers
on; restart them; make data disappear; make data reappear; saw an
operating system in half; run the rabbit virus; cast a spell of
protection against the rabbit virus; create order; or finally to
create chaos in selected files and file structures on the system
being manipulated.

Combining artistic hardware and software development, the Hackcube project
recasts and recodes magic as a form of hacking, cracking and virus
authoring because those that use Hackcube can attempt to intervene in the
normal operating of unsuspecting computers. Hackcube is itself a small and
seductive device, glowing, singing and murmuring in it’s own magical
languages. Hackcube responds when users approach it, glowing brighter and
singing more loudly as it as it is held and shaken.

The user castsspells but cannot control what spell Hackcube will choose.
As a powerfulbut autonomous tool, Hackcube retains it’s own agency as endowed and
articulated by the spells it casts across all operating systems. The
magical command line application window that IX creates on the
bewitched computer itself invokes not only the spells IX has cast but
also a sense of unexplainable mystery as Hackcube seizes control of the
computer and making the machine behave in ways that are unpredictable
and unexpected.
